Oedipus (Old Vic)

Welcome to one of two West End productions of Sophocles’ classic story Oedipus, a 2450 year old play that resonates just as powerfully now as it did when first staged in ancient Greece. The Old Vic’s version is a fresh new adaptation by Ella Hickson, due in the West End for January 2025 with the brilliant Rami Malek and Indira Varma in the starring roles. It’s Malek’s stage debut and the run dates are January 21st to March 29th 2025. This exploration of fate and free will is designed to thrill, with a shocking plot that never ages or dulls. If he knew, Sophocles would be delighted.

The Oracle says all will be well once the murderer of old King Laius is discovered and punished. It’s Oedipus’ job to save the city he loves. But when he begins his pursuit of reality, he quickly gets lost in a horrific landscape of fear and love, accidentally fulfilling a terrifying prophecy. Academy Award winner Rami Malek, who thrilled us with Bohemian Rhapsody and No Time To Die, joins the Olivier Award winning Indira Varma of Present Laughter, and Game of Thrones fame in Hickson’s ‘intimate and revelatory’ production. Not to be missed.

To much dancing!!
Great acting but complete over use of the dances in between scenes... Good beat and they add drama. But you can have to much of a good thing.. I had to close my eyes at some points because they went on and on Remi of course was fab. But 20 mins less dancing please

Classical drama treated with respect
Superb production of the ancient drama, not seeking to shoehorn a modern interpretation onto a story which needs no embellishment.

Surprising
I came with no expectations and left totally charmed. The adaptation was brilliant! I loved the beginning. The dancing and music were so very moving and conveyed to me stride struggle pain and hope. Music was tremendous. The two leads are favorites of mine who did not let me down
